"OM is indispensable"Behrang Rassekhi - Viola
Berhang started studying music at the age of 4 at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole in Firenze. He felt really free when he played in the Orchestra Mozart as he considered that Abbado let the musicians do the things the way they wanted as long as the result was excellent. He first met Abbado in the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester in 2004. He perfectly remembers when he first saw Abbado during the rehearsal for the 9th symphony of Mahler. He had high expectations, as he wanted to understand what Abbado did with his hands. When Abbado arrived at the rehearsal, he directed the musicians in such a way that they created an amazing sound. They were all amazed by this performance. Abbado had used the orchestra as if it were an instrument. To Behrang, OM means excellent quality and a deep relationship with music. Playing the viola offers him the possibility to do an amazing job. In some ways, the viola represents his life.
First Viola of the Filarmonica Toscanini.
Behrang was born in Florence of Iranian parents. He started playing music at the age of 4, in the academy of music of Fiesole. He perfected his knowledge with Piero Farulli, the historical viola of the Quartetto Italiano. He graduated with high honors and deepened his education with Jürgen Kussmaul in the Hochschule of Düsseldorf. During this period he performed his first concerts with chamber music formations: the Quartetto Escher, under the patronage of Quartetti Artemis and Prometeo, he received a scholarship to study in France and Germany.
Furthermore, he was selected by the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana and the European Union Youth Orchestre. The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester also selected him, still as a first viola. He also collaborated with the Symphonic Orchestra of Galice, the Symphonic Orchestra of Tenerife and the Theater Magdeburg, Kammerakademie Potsdam.
He arrived first in the concourse of the Real Filharmonia de Galicia and remained there for two years.
In 2011, he decided to renew his knowledge of the viola and renounced his position to study with Felix Schwartz, first viola of the Staatsoper of Berlin and with Wilfried Strehle, first viola of the Berliner Philarmoniker.
Then, in Italy, he passed successfully the auditions for the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Orchestra della Toscana and Teatro Lirico di Cagliari; he then decided to accept the role of first viola in the Filarmonica Toscanini. Claudio Abbado and Orchestra Mozart have played a major part in his musical education and career. OM member since 2004, with this orchestra he joined prestigious tours in Europe and participated in recordings with prestigious label such as Deutsche Grammophon, Harmonia Mundi, Euroarts. OM allowed him to play in chamber music concerts with étoiles such as Wolfram Christ, Danusha Waskiewicz, Enrico Bronzi, Lorenza Borrani, Alessio Allegrini.
However, Behrang is also concerned by the social aspects of music. This is why he accepted the invitation of David Barenboim to take part in the activities of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, an ensemble composed by Israeli musicians and musicians from the Middle East.
Behrang Rassekhi plays a viola crafted by Fabio Piagentini in 2015 and a bow by C. Hans-Karl Schmidt.
