Thomas Hammerschmidt comes from a musicians family so he naturally started playing music as a child.  He choose the trumpet and this turned to be a real passion for him. He was part of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester when he was picked by Maestro Abbado and became one of the founding members of Orchestra Mozart. To him, the Orchestra has something special, from the atmosphere to the interpretation. Thomas thinks that the Orchestra has the potential to give people a real intimate interpretation of music, something that comes from the depths of the human soul. He believes that since its creation “OM has never stopped growing”. He sees Orchestra Mozart as a project-based orchestra, able to bring different musicians with diverse energies depending on the projects. 


BIOGRAPHY

Thomas Hammerschmidt was born in Eisenstadt, Austria. He began his trumpet studies at the Joseph Haydn Conservatory in Eisenstadt, continued his studies at the University for Music and the Performing Arts in Graz, and at the University of the Arts in Vienna. He gained his first orchestral experience as a member of the Vienna Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. After completion of his studies, he received a stipend to attend the Berlin Philharmonic’s prestigious Karajan Academy.

Thomas Hammerschmidt has been a member of the  Orchestra Mozart since 2004. In August 2007, he won the position as Principal Trumpet with the Duisburger Philharmoniker (Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra), a position which he has held for over eight years. Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra is a category “A” orchestra in Germany. Located in Duisburg, this orchestra is also the resident orchestra of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf – Duisburg (German Opera on Rhine Düsseldorf – Duisburg).

He has also performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras in Germany, including Berlin Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, Essen Philharmonic Orchestra, Düsseldorf Symphonic Orchestra etc. In 2011 Thomas Hammerschmidt was appointed to the position of Lecturer for Trumpet at the Folkwang University of Arts in Essen, Germany.
