BIOGRAPHY

Herman van Kogelenberg, Principal Flute of the Munich Philharmonic, is a dutch flute player based in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Whilst studying, he was appointed Principal Flute with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège in 1999. He resigned from the orchestra to join the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam from 2003 until 2010. An invitation by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and their musical director Yannick Nezet-Seguin to become their  Principal Flute led to Rotterdam in 2010 and in September 2013 he was appointed Principal Flute of the Münchner Philharmoniker under Lorin Maazel. With the Münchner Philharmoniker he appeared as a soloist in 2016 and 2018.

Herman van Kogelenberg started to learn flute at an early age with Willem Tonnaer and went on to attend the conservatories of Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague where he studied with Abbie de Quant and Emily Beynon.

Herman van Kogelenberg regularly appears as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestra player in festivals worldwide and is a founder member of the Farkas Quintet Amsterdam since 1997. The Farkas Quintet Amsterdam is regarded as Netherlands’ premier woodwind quintet and toured extensively throughout the Netherlands and Europe. Recent cd releases of this ensemble include french repertoire, Haydn Seven Last Words and the world’s first live recording of the Arnold Schönberg Wind Quintet opus 26.

A passionate and dedicated teacher, Herman van Kogelenberg is regularly invited to give masterclasses in Europe, USA, or Asia, like at the Pacific Music Festival Japan, University of California Los Angeles, Shanghai Conservatory of Music and many others.

Between 2007 and 2010 Herman van Kogelenberg was professor at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and from 2010 till 2013 at the Rotterdam Conservatory Codarts.
