Accademia Filarmonica

The intention of the Philharmonic Academy, in promoting the creation of the Orchestra Mozart and appointing Claudio Abbado as artistic director, was to continue its policy of increasing its presence in the field of music in both Italy and abroad.

The Academy was founded in 1666, and over the centuries it has always been a point of reference in Bolognese cultural life. In the second half of the eighteenth century, the Philharmonic Academy played a key role in one of the most important periods of musical culture in Europe, thanks to the guidance of Padre Martini. In 1770, the fourteen-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart arrived in Bologna to take a composition test, in order to become an "Academician", a title which was necessary at the time to obtain employment as a choirmaster in the various courts of Europe.

Over the three and a half centuries of its history, some of the world's most prestigious musicians have been members of the Philharmonic Academy.

Today, just as it was 250 years ago, the Philharmonic Academy, together with Orchestra Mozart and Claudio Abbado, aims to be a point of reference for young musicians from all over the world, and to contribute towards the development of Bologna's reputation as a cultural centre.
