“OM is Claudio’s voice that still resonates”Mattia Petrilli - Flute
Mattia’s grandfather, a violin amateur player, first aroused his interest for classical music. To him, the Orchestra Mozart needs to be formed again as it is the voice of Abbado that keeps on, expressing itself through the music. He sees the flute as the tightrope-walker of the orchestra, a “crazy” instrument with a variable voice that goes from trills to sweet lullabies.
Born in 1984, Mattia Petrilli began to play the flute at the Conservatory of his city, Como. He continued advanced training with János Bálint at the Hochschule Für Musik in Detmold, and with Jacques Zoon at the Conservatoire Superieure in Geneva. He also studied with Emmanuel Pahud and Aurèle Nicolet.
In 2014 he is Prize Awarded at the Nicolet International Flute Competition.
Since 2005 he is a member of the Mozart Orchestra in Bologna, formed by musicians of international fame, founded and conducted by Claudio Abbado. Maestro Abbado has invited him from 2006 as first flute in the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra (concerts in Europe and South America), and to play with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra (concerts in Lucerne and Tokyo).
He perform as Principal Flute with important orchestras, such as London Philharmonic Orchestra, Bamberger Symphoniker, Symphonica Toscanini, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Camerata Salzburg, Essener Philharmoniker, Teatro dell’Opera di Firenze, Orchestra Sinfonica di Tenerife, Ensemble Les Dissonances, Festpielhaus-Erl Festival Orchester, Orchestra da Camera di Mantova, Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, Teatro Regio di Torino, under the baton of the most famous conductors (Abbado, Blomstedt, Chung, Gardiner, Gardner, Haitink, Harding, Heras-Casado, Gatti, N. Jarvi, P. Jordan, V. Jurowski, Kuhn, Maazel, Masur, Matheuz, Nelsons, Ono, Pinnock, F.X. Roth, Salonen, Ticciati…).
As a soloist, he performed with the Detmolder Kammerorchester, the Milano Symphony Orchestra “G.Verdi”, the Orchestra 1813, and the Rumenian Philharmonic Orchestra “R. Valcea”.
His chamber music activity is intense, and he is regularly invited in important Festivals: Bologna Festival, Stresa Festival, Lingotto Musica in Turin, Teatro Grande of Brescia, Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna, Unione Musicale Turin, Festival of Portogruaro (Italy); Lucerne Festival and Septembre Musicale Montreux (Switzerland); Theater Ulm and Schlosstheater Fulda (Germany); Lucena Festival and Festival Arte no Camino (Spain)… In 2001 he debuted with the Uberbrettl-Ensemble, and he performs in duo with the pianists Pierpaolo Maurizzi and Michele Gamba, and with the cembalist Luca Quintavalle. He is a founding member of the Woodwinds Quintet Papageno.
